Soul Campaign by Rod Pauls, InterVarsity
[Editor's Note - The work of changing the hearts of American citizens is very effective on college campuses. These changes have lasting and significant effect on public policy both national and local. They also have an international effect as students from other countries make decisions to serve Jesus Christ. "We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion .... Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." John Adams]
"What is the nature of the soul?" "What does it mean if people have souls?" "Is there a Soul Inside?" These are just a few of the questions that were being raised by students at the University of New Mexico earlier this spring during a campus-wide outreach called the Soul Campaign. The goal of the campaign, which involved four different evangelical campus ministries, was to invite everyone on campus to think about the existence of the soul. Through posters, T-shirts, key chains and cups of hot chocolate, students, faculty and staff members at UNM were exposed to symbols and questions that essentially asked, "Is there something more to a person than just his or her physical existence?"
Held during the month of February, the first week of the campaign involved handing out cups of hot chocolate and coffee to students and others passing by. The cups each bore a symbol that showed a person looking down at a hole in his/her chest. There was a "?" underneath the person. Many people wondered what the meaning of the symbol was. As student gave out the cups of hot liquid they were able to engage in lively discussion concerning this question. People suggested all kinds of possibilities from, "Hey, I've been shot!" to "What's inside of me?" Some students were upset to learn that Christian groups were responsible for the symbol, but most people were intrigued.
The second week of the campaign involved the introduction of a new symbol on posters around campus and worn on T-shirts purchased by the Christian students. The new symbol still had the person with a hole in the chest, but underneath it said, "Soul Inside?" Also, during this week, info tables were set up where interested students could pick up a copy of an article that gave some evidences for the existence of an immaterial component to the human person. Key chains with the "Soul Inside?" symbol were also available at the tables.
During the third and fourth weeks of the campaign, Christian faculty participated in The Nature of the Soul lunch discussions. On four different days, students were able to hear professors from different disciplines share their views on the soul. Three professors from the Psychology department spoke in one of the discussions. Individual professors from Health Sciences, Sociology and Religious Studies spoke in each of the other discussions. During these two weeks of the campaign, students continued wearing their T-shirts on designated days and were out on campus doing questionnaires with those who would take the time to answer a few questions.
The campaign concluded with an art symposium. Two weeks before the campaign officially began, art students were informed of a contest that would be held on March 5, and were invited to submit an art piece that had to do with the soul, along with an explanation of how their piece connected with the soul. The Art Symposium was held in the Student Union Building on March 5 and featured more than 20 entries of varying styles and media. The winner received a cash award of $200.
Even though the Soul Campaign took place in the month of February, planning for the event started in October of 2003. A group of about 15 students, along with staff members from the four different ministries, met in December to develop some ideas and map out strategy for training and getting people on board. The group met again in January and during the last two weeks of January several training events were held to help students be ready for the start of the campaign. The campaign officially kicked off with a Concert of Prayer on Sunday, February 8 at City on a Hill Fellowship-a church located just a block east of the UNM campus. The ministries sponsoring the event included Campus Crusade for Christ, Christian Student Center, the Navigators, and InterVarsity Christian Fellowship.
One Nation Under God
The Pledge of Allegiance is temporarily safe thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to dismiss on a technicality the case that has called into question the Pledge's constitutionality since 2002. Atheist Michael Newdow - who brought the issue before the Court - was told he had no legal standing to file the case on behalf of his daughter because she was not in his custody. But many critics feel that the Court's decision not to review the constitutionality issue itself only leaves the door open for another similar case. Full text of the decision is available from the US Supreme Court website under Elk Grove Unified School Dist. v. Newdow (PDF format). The opinion of the court includes an excellent history of the Pledge of Allegiance and a fascinating dissent by Chief Justice Rehnquist, Justice O'Connor, and Justice Thomas.
As its history illustrates, the Pledge of Allegiance evolved as a common public acknowledgment of the ideals that our flag symbolizes. Its recitation is a patriotic exercise designed to foster national unity and pride in those principles.
Act of June 14, 1954, ch. 297, 68 Stat. 249. The House Report that accompanied the legislation observed that, "[f]rom the time of our earliest history our peoples and our institutions have reflected the traditional concept that our Nation was founded on a fundamental belief in God."
The Court today erects a novel prudential standing principle in order to avoid reaching the merits of the constitutional claim. I dissent from that ruling. On the merits, I conclude that the Elk Grove Unified School District (School District) policy that requires teachers to lead willing students in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, which includes the words "under God," does not violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. (Chief Justice Rehnquist, Justice O'Connor, and Justice Thomas)
This decision sends a message to lower courts and public schools that for now, the phrase "one nation under God" stays in the Pledge of Allegiance. A decision to remove the phrase would be a clear message to God that America, as a nation, no longer has any reliance on Him. Take advantage of our freedoms while we still have them! Recognize the importance of appointing Godly, conservative judges to the Supreme Court and other federal judicial positions.
Independence Day Celebration
Friday, Jul 2 and Sunday, Jul 4 at Believers Center of Albuquerque. America's roots are deeply planted in the spiritual legacy of those who established this nation "under God." They were, almost to a man, professing Christians who came to America in search of freedom. Jul 2nd will be a fun filled evening for the whole family as we celebrate our independence as a nation - games, food, music, clowns. No alcohol, fireworks, or smoking allowed. Special patriotic service on Jul 4th to celebrate and give thanks. Nursery, children, and youth ministries will be available.
Equip Conference 2004 - "What's Your Problem?"
We have all struggled at one time or another with set backs in our physical and spiritual life. No matter how hard we may try, it seems to be a fact of life. But God tells us that by His grace, we can find power in weakness (2 Cor 12:9). This concept makes no sense to the world, however, for believers this is a truth we must live by. When we allow Jesus to overcome us, He is able to give us the strength to do what we could never begin to do on our own.
Hoffmantown Church's second annual Equip Conference will focus on learning to allow Jesus to overcome the weaknesses in our lives. At this year's conference entitled, "What's Your Problem?" we will hear from individuals who have been confronted with life's most difficult obstacles, but are overcomers because of Christ. The question, "What's Your Problem?" has special meaning to each guest speaker at Equip 2004. For some, drugs, prison, and orphanages were their obstacles. For others, it's physical, the inability to walk or see. Things we often take for granted, our speakers don't. They have learned to allow Jesus to give them the power to overcome their weaknesses on a daily basis.
Come learn how He will do the same for you. We have all been victimized by life's circumstances, but in Christ we don't have to live as victims. Join us July 17-21, 2004 at Hoffmantown Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This is a FREE conference for anyone who would like to attend a week of encouragement and Bible teaching, from people just like us, who have faced life's hardest challenges but have overcome by God's grace. Federal Marriage Amendment
Citizenlink Special Report - Why Marriage Matters.
The Internal Revenue Service in a June 14 letter to the Public Advocate of the United States - a conservative, pro-family group - states that homosexual couples filing joint tax returns as if they were married would be in violation of the law under the federal Defense of Marriage Act.
Thousands of Southern Baptists met in Indianapolis this week for the 16.3-million-member denomination's annual business meeting, and addressed a number of current hot topics. The 8,500 representatives called for passage of the Federal Marriage Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would ban gay marriage.
The U.S. Senate will vote on The Federal Marriage Amendment on or about July 15. I urge you to respond to the call of President Bush for support by helping send one million letters to the Senate. This will be the most letters ever received by the Senate on any issue. We must not allow one liberal, activist Federal judge to overturn all marriage laws and make homosexual marriage legal in all 50 states. Some have referred to this as the most important vote in the history of our nation. Homosexual marriage would radically reshape our society. Send an email to Senator Bingaman and Senator Domenici today. Hand written letters are even more effective.
Sad State of Affairs - NM Referendum Law
Article 17 of the NM Constitution reads: "1-17-1. Referendum petitions; who may sign. Any person who is a qualified elector of New Mexico and who disapproves any law not excepted by the constitution of New Mexico may sign a referendum petition in his own proper handwriting, and not otherwise, to order a referendum vote upon a law enacted at the last preceding session of the legislature."
The NM Attorney General, Patricia Madrid, has taken it upon herself to supersede the NM Constitution and exercise her power through executive activism. She has stated petitions will NOT be accepted allowing the general public to vote on the new law (SB28/HB277) prohibiting discrimination against sexual orientation and gender identity in the form of hiring, firing, and promotions. This law has the greatest impact on occupations affecting children.
Groups are continuing to collect signatures in an attempt to convince NM Legislators to rescind this heinous law in 2005. A list of NM Legislators who voted for this law will also be circulated to assist conservative voters in the Nov 2004 election. In the meantime, inquire about homosexual staff in organizations affecting your children. If you know of a Christian and/or pro-family business/organization facing a lawsuit over this issue, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Read the truth about homosexuality from Focus on the Family. Fact:According to the Centers for Disease Control, homosexual men are a thousand times more likely to contract AIDS than the general male heterosexual population. Read The High Cost of Sodomy from Family Research Institute. Many of the costs associated with sodomy are "hidden" or difficult to "price." How do we estimate the cost of having to reorganize society to accommodate changes in marriage and family law or practice, for instance? What about changes in public accommodations or discrimination law due to new "civil rights?"
[Editor's Note - not too long in the future, what you have just read may be considered a hate crime and prosecuted as a federal offense. The U.S. Senate passed an amendment to the Defense bill Tuesday that would define any crime performed on a special class (designated by Congress) as a "hate crime" and thus deserving harsher penalties than if they were performed on "average" citizens. The bill defines these special classes as "actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, or disability." Pastors were warned at the recent Southern Baptist Convention that they will soon be faced with a choice to either preach a watered-down gospel and obey the laws of man, or to preach the full gospel and risk the threat of jail or even death. They were urged to never be afraid to speak the truth.]
