Memorial Day, 30 May 2005 - more than just a day off. As we reflect on the lives, the sacrifices, and the suffering of our military and law enforcement, let us also reflect on the principles for which they gave up so much. We have a responsibility as citizens of this great nation to fight for foundational principles and not let them slip quietly into the night. We owe a debt to fallen patriots who believed enough in these principles to die for them. Please visit the Focus on the Family Memorial Day Topic.
PRAYER -
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers,
intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and
for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life
in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight
of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto
the knowledge of the truth. I Tim 2:1-4
ENCOUNTER -
And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come. Luk 19:13

Memorial Day
For many of us, Memorial Day is simply a day off from work and an opportunity to gather around the barbecue with friends and family to usher in summer. Of course, the true purpose of this observance is to honor the men and women in our Armed Forces who have given their lives in defense of the freedoms we hold so dear. This year, with the war on terror raging in the Middle East and elsewhere, it is especially important that we pause and remember. Join us as we pay tribute to America's heroes.

National Police Week / Law Enforcement Memorial
The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office and the Albuquerque Police Department will be hosting a memorial service to honor our officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. In conjunction with National Police Week, we have chosen Tuesday, May 17, 2005, to honor our officers who have fallen in the line of duty. We extend an invitation to you and your family to attend the memorial at noon on the Civic Plaza. Following the services, refreshments will be served at the Law Enforcement Center 5th floor conference room.
No one has greater love than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Chan 4 Set to Broadcast Unlocking the Mystery of Life
KOB TV Channel 4 to air the science documentary Unlocking the Mystery of Life on Sunday, May 22 at 4 pm. Unlocking the Mystery of Life is a controversial video that makes the scientific case for intelligent design. Four months ago it was scheduled to be aired on Albuquerque's PBS station, KNME TV Channel 5 but at the last minute KNME pulled the video when they discovered an evangelical Christian funding source. KNME stated their reason for pulling the video was their concern about the public perception that "editorial control might have been exercised by the program...funders." www.nmidnet.org

Scopes Trial Reenactment
In 1925, teaching evolution was illegal. Now the opposite is true. Even the IDEA that life might be designed instead of evolved is prohibited for public dissemination by the power brokers of NM. Promoters of Unlocking the Mystery of Life have to settle for a paid announcement in a religious time slot. The Abq Journal reported: "The station, however, is treating it as paid advertising or an hour-long infomercial. 'During elections, we accept political paid programming, and on Sundays we air religious paid programming,' said Susan Connor, KOB station manager.
Where did this all start? Find out in a professional reenactment of the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial on July 29-30 at the Kimo Theater in Albuquerque. See www.scopes-trial.com for ticket information.
What's wrong with the Hollywood version of the trial (Inherit the Wind)? Rarely, it seems, does a year go by that the Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee play Inherit the Wind about the famous "monkey trial" is not produced by local high schools and colleges. In addition, the 1960 film of the same name featuring Frederic March and Spencer Tracy appears frequently on local television. Lest there be even a few who have some how failed to see these productions, NBC produced its own color remake of Inherit the Wind in 1988 which it has aired twice on nationwide television. All of these versions of Inherit the Wind are quite similar, with both film versions expanding on certain themes of the original play. Inherit the Wind is perceived as a documentary and is used to influence the Creation-Evolution debate. Find out what REALLY happened in the trial. Much more info at: www.gennet.org/facts/scopes.html
Walter Scott's Personality Parade says Scopes was THE most significant trial of the 20th century.
QUESTION: Every high-profile trial - from the Lindberg kidnapping to Sam Sheppard, the Manson family and O.J. - has been billed as the Trial of the Century. Which one tops your list? - Dan Muller, Royal Oak, MI
ANSWER: None of those. Our vote for Trial of the 20th Century goes to the 1925 case of John Scopes, a high school science teacher charged with illegally teaching evolution in Dayton, TN. "The Monkey Trial," as it came to be known, began a culture war that still rages in America. Parade Magazine, 27 Mar 05

School Choice Celebrating 50 Years
2005 marks the 50th anniversary of when Milton Friedman first articulated an old idea of liberty in a new way, thus launching the modern school choice movement. Throughout the year, the Friedman Foundation will be celebrating this anniversary with events in San Francisco and New York, the release of a book considering the merits of Friedman's idea for the 21st century, a reprinting of Liberty in Education, and numerous articles in this year's School Choice Advocate.
Opposition to vouchers claims unwanted government control in private education. However, most private schools accept federal scholarships such as the GI Bill.

School Taxes - How Deep Are Your Pockets?
The Abq Journal reported on 6 Mar 2002, "The APS board agreed to consider hiring private companies to manage failing schools. Board President Leonard DeLayo had pledged the board's support for getting proposals from private companies to manage some APS schools." Did this ever happen?
An amendment to the NM Constitution was passed in Nov 2003 allocating an additional $75M to NM public schools from the land grant fund. What was this money used for?
The Abq Journal reported on 25 Jan 2005, "The tax levy question is the first of four upcoming APS elections for capital projects for 2006 to 2011. Next year, voters will be asked to approve a bond question. APS will hold another tax levy question in 2007 and another bond election in 2009. APS hopes to raise a total of $454.25 million for capital projects from all four elections." They'll keep asking for more until we say that's ENOUGH.
The Abq Journal reported on 4 Feb 2005, "The percentage of Albuquerque 10th-graders who passed the state's high school exit exam fell to a three-year low last year, officials announced this week." Where are the results for what we spend?

How Bad Can it Get?
How bad can sex ed get after NM Dept of Health pulls abstinence education from NM public schools? U.S. District Judge Alexander Williams issued a temporary restraining order Thursday that prevents the Montgomery County school system in suburban Washington, D.C., from using the [sex ed] pilot program in six schools. It's possible. We may also need a restraining order to protect the children of NM.

Book Review - State of Fear
Excellent review of Michael Crichton's new book State of Fear by Focus on the Family author Matt Kaufman in the Jun 2005 Citizen Magazine. Will be available in about a month from www.family.org/cforum/citizenmag/pissues.cfm.
Titled "No Time to Panic," Kaufman points out the fact and fiction in Crichton's book. He contrasts State of Fear with the movie "The Day After Tomorrow" that attributes massive global climate change (read catastrophe) to global warming. The last REAL global catastrophe was Noah's flood and THAT was caused by God. His concluding paragraph sums up our choices well: "God calls us to be stewards of His creation, and that means dealing with environmental problems that do exist. But it also means making wise use of our time, talents, and treasure. For those too are finite resources. They need to be focused on real threats to humanity, not on phantom menaces."

Movie Review - Sahara
Excellent review from Focus on the Family of the new movie Sahara by author Clive Cussler. The review quotes Cussler's family values: "I don't have any sex in my books," Cussler has said. "And no four-letter words, because when I started writing my kids were quite young. I thought, 'Someday they're going to read these books.' ... I didn't feel it was necessary. The sex slows the action down. They never learned that in the movies."
Exciting movie and also an environmental thriller (see State of Fear above).
