Ecc 5:19 Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this [is] the gift of God.

intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and
for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life

Labor Day History
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.
In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

Hometown Hero
The West Side Journal, 29 Jul 05, ran a story on Brad Earlwine. Earlwine is the coach of the Westside Chess Club. He is a former special ed teacher and is recognized as one of the top 30 chess coaches in the nation. Brad is also remembered for teaching Roscoe Williams, a chess prodigy who had been considered a problem child until Brad connected with him through chess. "Chess represents life. Each of the pieces represents virtue. The chess pieces could symbolize the six pillars of Character Counts. The pawn stands for citizenship, the knight is trustworthyness, the rook is responsibility, the bishop is respect, the king is fairness, and the queen is caring."
Shortly after the article ran, a reader responded to Mr Earlwine with the following message. "I remembered how you were my brothers teacher and my cousin Carlos. I may have my sons try to join your team. Rosco visits us in the lumber yard often. My brother Nino has a tumor in his brain. The tumor is inoperable. The doctors are not giving us any good news and Nino is in very much pain. He has always told me good things about you and that you were one of the only people that took the time with kids with troubles and I know he will always remember you for that. I think Nino always looked at chess as more than just a game. It really is a big part of his life. Now we are faced with a tremendous battle for his life and I would like him to know that everyone is pulling for him." - Monica
Good job Mr Earlwine. You're a real hero!

Election Schedule
The ballot on Oct 4 will include candidates for Abq Mayor and City Council (odd districts). Also watch for bond issues and other city initiatives on the ballot. A measure to provide public funding for political candidates would put conservative (politically incorrect) candidates at a disadvantage since funding would certainly be pulled if a candidate said anything against abortion, homosexuality, "safe" sex, environmental activism, or evolution. Campaign finances are on the Abq website.
- Sep 5 - voter registration deadline
- Oct 4 - election
- Nov 18 - runoff if needed (40%, 45 days)
The candidates. A list of candidates is available at www.rges.cc/candidates.doc.
The questions. Questions were sent to Mayoral and City Council candidates. Answers will reflect candidate positions on a broad range of issues and were selected from the popular voter service called Vote Smart. Vote Smart does not address local elections but will be a significant asset in the 2006 election.
The election. See www.cabq.gov/clerk for more info on the election.

ID in RRPS?
What is Intelligent Design (ID) and why is it such a hot topic? Focus on the Family describes ID as "rooted in the observation, which goes back at least as far as ancient Greece, that the world looks very much as if it was created by an intelligent being. Intelligent design contends that living organisms appear designed because they are designed, exhibiting features that natural processes cannot mimic. That impression has only been strengthened by scientific advances, especially in biology."
ID makes the news when the established scientific community gets their feathers ruffled which happened recently when the Rio Rancho School Board passed a measure to allow students the option to discuss alternatives to the theory of evolution (in accordance with NM Science Standards). Now what could be so threatening about discussing alternative theories unless your theory is the ONLY theory you want discussed. This happened in 1925 in reverse and resulted in the well known Scopes Trial. TN passed a law in 1925 making it illegal to teach evolution. Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan had it out in an eight day court battle that convicted John Scopes of teaching evolution illegally. TN later reversed that law and now the educational establishment in America is prohibited from teaching creation (regardless of a growing body of evidence against evolution and hundreds of scientists skeptical of evolution). A portion of the Scopes Trial was recently reenacted at the Kimo Theater in Albuquerque.
What really happened in Rio Rancho? One reader was astounded to read in the paper that Kathy Jackson, a school board member, apparently opposed ID. "As far as the Rio Rancho School Board is concerned I am very disappointed in Kathy Jackson's position of 'this is not the right time and maybe we should wait and see how all this plays out' before we support the Don Schlichte (sponsor) and Marty Scharfglass policy. The proposed policy is the most benign form of 'Let's teach all theories and give the evidences for and against each theory and the let the students evaluate for themselves what is reasonable or the truth.' The proposal says that 'teachers should be allowed to teach an objective science education process without religious or philosophical bias, that upholds the highest standards of empirical science.' Why does Kathy Jackson want to wait to see how President Bush's statement (schools should teach both Evolution and Intelligent Design) will 'play out' and why does she say that the 'time is not right' to adopt the Schlichte policy?" - Jim Hovis
Kathy Jackson said she was not at liberty to discuss the issue since Rio Rancho School District lawyers had instructed school board members not to make any comments yet. More info should be available next week.
The topic was all over Albuquerque news and talk shows last week. The irony of the ACLU suing school districts today over teaching intelligent design or creation is that the ACLU sued the Dayton TN school district in 1925 for prohibiting the teaching of evolution. Now the tables are turned. Why isn't the ACLU suing school districts for prohibiting the teaching of intelligent design or creation? The ACLU claims ID is religion. ID proponents claim ID is science. Let the evidence speak for itself and let students decide which theory is more probable. So much for academic freedom. Secular Humanism is a religion and schools are not prohibited from preaching atheism.
The principles of evolution and naturalism are racist and deny the existence of God, thus oppose even the most fundamental of American documents - the Declaration of Independence: "... all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, ...." Without our Creator, we have NOTHING! But then, atheists seem to have no problem dealing with that. If humans are nothing more than animals and it's just a matter of survival of the fittest, then atheists are prepared to do ANYTHING to survive.
Please contact the Rio Rancho School Board and encourage them to stand firm in their decision to follow NM Science Standards and allow options for discussing alternatives to the theory of evolution. Some teachers are currently intimidating and harassing students who are skeptical of the theory of evolution and who want to pursue other options.

Gov Supersedes School Board Authority
The school board in Reserve NM (~120 mi west of Socorro) determined the well providing water to the school was contaminated. The school board decided to close the school and bus the children to Silver City. Gov Richardson stepped in (via a letter from Sec of Ed, Veronica Garcia) and has directed the school to fix the well with approximately $400K of funding diverted from other educational programs in NM.
The Gov has a penchant for power but the citizens of NM keep approving the changes. There was a constitutional amendment to add a Sec of Ed in NM who promptly stripped the elected State Board of Ed of its function to make policy and approve funding (~$2B). Now "the role of the Commission is advisory to the Secretary of Education." Local school boards are now threatened by a potential new policy from the Governor's office that will replace elected school board members if they oppose the Governor. The Governor's ultimate goal is to replace all school boards with State controlled committees.

Gov Pushes for Universal Pre-K
If you saw the Alamogordo paper, Walter Rubel wrote another article again for our info regarding Pre-K. Again the Governor is saying that next year he will push for Pre-K to go "universal." If this is the case, the promise by CYFD and PED to "supplement and not supplant private providers" will be rather unlikely. What private provider can compete against free programs offered universally to the public? Again, one of my own biggest concerns is that the 30% or more of religious schools already serving Pre-K needs will be faced with the choice of dropping their curriculum or losing their school due to the language of the current bill. Each time even one private provider is pushed out, the costs and impacts to communities escalate. It seems to me that all New Mexicans have the right to know the ultimate dollar amount projected to be spent annually and how Pre-K may soon impact their cities, State (and public and private schools) since they are the ones who will ultimately foot the bill. Yet, how many (of the public) have even heard or understand these amounts or impacts? Even the Legislators were given projected annual costs that varied as much as $20 million to more than $90 million during the legislative session! ($70 million seems like a rather dramatic variable).
It is critical for the public to contact all of the State Representatives and Senators now and to also consider sending delegates to these Legislative meetings if they want their opinions considered. As we learned this year, most decisions are made long before the actual legislative session. By the way, Baji has been extremely gracious in keeping us informed. I would appreciate anyone who can help by sending me additional emails of the private providers in your area (that wish to be included in these Pre-K updates) or, you can forward this info to them and they can reply to me, if they like.
God bless,

Ruth, The Redeemer's Bride
Award winning Gospel singer Myra Green of Glorieta, New Mexico is excited to introduce Ruth, the Redeemer's Bride, a new, original, Music-Drama of the book of Ruth! The entire book presents a foreshadow of Jesus, the Messiah. It is a portrayal of how a Gentile from Moab named Ruth met her "redeemer" & was "grafted in" to God's family, to become the great grandmother of King David (in the lineage of Christ).
Looking back a couple of years, Myra recalled how God had been saying she would "sing a new song"; now God has done it through this spiritually powerful Music-Drama. Though Myra still shares the gospel through Ray Calcote's Country Gospel music, she knows that God has given her this new Music-Drama to reach even more people, and open their eyes to Jesus as he is revealed in the old testament of our Bible. Myra portrays Ruth, and shares her story in a faithful account of the old testament book of Ruth. It is a story - about family, - about great loss and tragedy, - about a daughter's love. Most of all it is a love story, that parallels the greatest love story ever told!
This is a brand new, contemporary, 50 minute long, evangelistic Music-Drama featuring 11 outstanding original piano compositions. Five of the songs are by Clif & Myra Green's 17 year old son Allen, who said, "I believe that God is going to use this musical to touch many people's lives!" (Myra home schooled Allen and she also taught a home school drama class for 4 years! Leading up to the Music-Drama, Myra led her last home school drama class to make a musical based upon the book of Ruth.) Another 5 songs were composed by 18 year old Alison Sanderson (a former home school drama student of Myra's). Alison said, "God has truly blessed me by giving me the opportunity to write these songs and work with Myra! I am very thankful to Him for giving me the ability, and the opportunity to offer my talents back to Him." The final song was written by Brian Rigdon, Youth Pastor at Mt. Valley Church in Edgewood, NM, and a long time friend.
Ruth, the Redeemer's Bride is also a brand new album on CD and tape, available free wherever Myra does a performance. It will be available on DVD soon too! Paul & Trudy Crumb of Unfailing Love Ministries in Grants, NM produced the album. Allen Green & Alison Sanderson also performed the songs they composed. Usually, Myra will do the performance using prerecorded music tracks. By special arrangement, Allen & Alison may also be available for a live performance with Myra.
Ruth, the Redeemer's Bride is presented free of charge, just like the Country Gospel concerts Myra has performed in churches throughout New Mexico and around the country since 1995. At each performance, a display table with the CD's, tapes and a donation box are set up in the auditorium. Some churches take a love offering, but this is never required. Call to have Myra come to your church this year.
Schedule a free Music-Drama or concert! We are now scheduling through June 2006. Church leaders (or members too) need to contact us soon. People can even stop by our home and office at 370 Aspen in Glorieta Conference Center. Anyone that would like to hear the album to consider having Myra lead a retreat or perform for their church outreach event, may call, email or write. Myra and I (husband Clif who edits this Chronicle) are the co-founders of Green Ridge Ministries. God has blessed us with this "new song" (and drama)! Please pray with us - that Jesus Christ will be lifted high & this ministry will help lead more people to Him!
May God bless you & vaya con Dios!

Location: Sarracino Middle School Auditorium, Socorro
"I am giant at 6' 7." On the outside I look big, but on the inside I was living small. The value of myself was small. My vision was small. My belief in overcoming my challenges was small. When we think small and believe small, we limit ourselves. We limit our profits in life - who we can become, what we can give, where we can go and even what we can achieve. The key is choosing to live big and that's one of the powerful lessons I love to communicate. But it has to start on the inside with our choices and gradually the power of choosing to live big works its way out into all areas of our life."

Gas Prices
Six years ago on April 30,1999, a gas out was staged across Canada and the U.S. to bring the price of gas down, and it worked. It's time to do something about it again. This time, lets make it for three days instead of just one. The oil cartel decided to slow production to drive up gasoline prices. Lets see how many American people we can get to ban together for a three day period in August NOT TO BUY ANY GASOLINE, during those three days.
LET'S HAVE A GAS OUT.
Do not buy any gasoline from August 29, 2005, THROUGH August 31, 2005. Buy what you need before the dates listed above, or after, but try not to buy any during the GAS OUT. If you want to help, just send this to everyone you know and ask them to do the same. We brought the prices down once before, and we can do it again! Come on North America lets stand together. WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Iraq Constitution
Principles CINews ran several articles on the Iraq constitution this year. One major issue highlighted was religious freedom. FRC Washington Update ran the following article on 24 Aug. Religious freedom may be a key issue in the success of democracy in Iraq. Principles ARE important!
"Versions circulating in the press raise concerns about its handling of religious liberties. It appears that the final draft will make Islam the "main source" of law, and state that no law can contradict the 'fixed' principles of Islam. Who will determine which Islamic principles are fixed? Who will determine whether legislation would violate those principles? The most recent draft reportedly balances these provisions with additional ones stating that no law can contradict the principles of democracy and human rights. The meaningfulness of this rights provision, however, will depend on which rights are specified in the final Constitution. It is not now clear how the provision on human rights and democracy will relate to those making Islam the basis of law. There is also a question over whether a freedom of religion clause will apply to groups or to individuals. Freedom of religious belief and practice is the most fundamental of liberties, and without it, it is doubtful that other democratic freedoms can truly exist."

Fish and Humans Feel Pain
Principles CINews also ran an article in a recent issue regarding the study of pain felt by fish as a reason proposed to deter people from fishing. The author of the study refused to comment on the possibility of pain in human unborn babies though the biology of nervous systems is hardly a leap of understanding - if fish feel pain (simple) then human babies feel pain (complex). FRC Washington Update ran the following article on 24 Aug. Five researchers at UCSF claim that babies do not feel pain. But fish do. Go figure.
" An article published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), claiming that unborn children do not feel pain before six months, neglects to mention the clear agenda of the report's authors, five researchers at the University of California, San Francisco. The study, which is actually merely a review of other papers and contains no new research, does not mention that one author is the director of a clinic that provides abortion services, or that the lead author once worked for NARAL. The authors' histories were purposely withheld from JAMA editors--most likely in fear their backgrounds would expose their pro-abortion agenda and cast doubt on their research. The report was immediately dismissed by Dr. K.S. Anand, a pediatrician at the University of Arkansas for Medical Services."
