PRAYER -
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers,
intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and
for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life
in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight
of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto
the knowledge of the truth. I Tim 2:1-4
- Families who are displaced and who have lost loved ones in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina
- Students and teachers will be fervently praying for our communities on Sep 21st. Pray for their safety and that school officials will not prohibit this event. Pray for many to see the faith of those around them and the God of the Bible. Praise God we still have the freedom to pray in most places.
- Pray for purity in the lives of singles and faithfulness in the lives of married couples. Pray for the marriage seminar, abstinence presentation, purity ball, and singles class described below to reach as many people as possible.
- As Biblical principles are under attack in America today, public education is the most popular place to instill the values of atheism and secular humanism. Pray that Christians will have success in raising up teachers that understand Biblical principles for education and are not afraid to teach them. Pray for the Rudiments Course, Christian Heritage Speech Competition, and American Education Week described below.
- Bless our efforts to protect the unborn.
Walk for Life and Born to Run are events that raise money to raise awareness. In this environment of court sanctioned killing of unborn babies, our best strategy is to share the truth about the humanity of unborn babies. Also pray for a Constitutional Amendment protecting unborn life much like the 13th Amendment in 1865 declared the humanity of African Americans. Pray for nomination and confirmation of judges not afraid to overturn Roe v Wade. The slaughter must end or God will end it.
- Pray for alleviation of starvation around the world. We are blessed with a standard of living in America that virtually eliminates starvation. Pray for the governments of these countries to take responsibility or at least allow relief supplies to get to the people who need it.
- Pray for truthful media on candidates prior to local elections. (Abq Mayor and City Council, Oct 4th) Pray for Christians to take responsbility and VOTE on Oct 4th. Pray for supernatural discernment.
- Pray for the freedom to teach the truth regarding origins of the universe, life, and humanity. We are at an amazing time in history where NEVER before has science seen so much evidence of our Creator. Praise God!
- Wings Ministry to families of prisoners. Families and prisoners are at a receptive time of their lives and many are open to spiritual guidance.

Refugees from Katrina
As we reflect on the anniversary of 911, we have a greater tragedy in terms of loss of life to deal with - New Orleans. Many local organizations are helping with refugees and some have gone to New Orleans to help. If you have a personal story related to New Orleans, we'd like to share it with our readers. As of this printing, there are more volunteers than families which speaks well of the citizens of Albuquerque. You can contact these organizations if you'd like to help.
* Congressman Bill Redmond, Retired, 505-661-2335. Asking churches to adopt a family for at least three months or provide financial assistance.
* Focus on the Family. Experts call it an opportunity to offer "holy hospitality." Tens of thousands of people who survived Hurricane Katrina are in need of a place to stay until they can get their lives back together. Churches are meeting that need one family at a time. www.family.org/cforum/news/a0037849.cfm
* Albuquerque Red Cross. Matching refugee families with local help.
American Red Cross, Mid-Rio Grande Chapter, 142 Monroe NE Abq NM 87108
midriogrande@usa.redcross.org, 265-8514, www.redcrossalbq.org
* City of Albuquerque, www.cabq.gov. Seeking employment opportunities, offering housing, and federal benefits. You can also dial 311 for more info.
* HSLDA. Assisting homeschoolers displaced from New Orleans. www.homeschoolfoundation.org/hurricane/default.asp
* Family Research Council. FEMA is registering people in Red Cross and other public shelters but those in private homes and churches must register on their own. Displaced people can register on-line at www.fema.gov or by calling 1-800-621-3362. If you are operating a shelter with 500 people or more, please let us know by contacting us at 1-800-225-4008 so that we can put you in contact with the Faith-Based Office in the White House. These monies are intended to help families take the next step in recovering from their losses in Hurricane Katrina. Most of the churches that are providing relief to the thousands of displaced citizens have not received any governmental assistance. If you would like to support local churches in meeting the needs of these hurting families, please visit www.prccompassion.org or call 1-888-966- 6600.
In the midst and aftermath of immeasurable pain and loss, questions come to our minds. What are we to think about storms so horrific that insurance companies call them "acts of God?" Do these annual winds of destruction reflect the judgment of God? Are they the work of a powerful spiritual enemy? Or is the immeasurable heartbreak of stunned communities rooted only in the unfortunate convergence of natural events? For more see www.rbc.org.
Was the response sufficient? Who's at fault. Check out the story "Why Didn't Louisiana Follow its Required Emergency Plan?" before jumping on the bandwagon disparaging federal authorities. Congressmen should read this before allocating any funding for rebuilding New Orleans.

Patriot Day
Patriot Day has been the third monday in April. Its earliest observance was in 1894 throughout the northeastern states. Patriot Day commemorates the battle of Lexington and Concord which were fought on April 19, 1775. Part of the history of this famous revolutionary battle was the midnight ride of Paul Revere and William Dawes. The Sons of the American Revolution in Massachusetts were largely responsible for the official recognition of the event.
Today only a few states recognize the holiday. However, its celebrations are known by many. Besides several reenactments of the famous midnight ride, there are other festivities including professional baseball games and the running of the Boston Marathon. That was before 911. Now, Patriot Day is also celebrated on Sep 11 in honor of those who perished in NY, PA, and the Pentagon.
We recall the words of President Bush as he reacted to the attack on our homeland. "Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts. The victims were in airplanes or in their offices -- secretaries, businessmen and women, military and federal workers. Moms and dads. Friends and neighbors. Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror. … Today, our nation saw evil, the very worst of human nature, and we responded with the best of America, with the daring of our rescue workers, with the caring for strangers and neighbors who came to give blood and help in any way they could. … The search is underway for those who are behind these evil acts. I've directed the full resources for our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and bring them to justice. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them."
President Bush correctly recognized what was behind the terrorism - EVIL. He closed his address with the words of the 23rd Psalm: "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me." We should not fear evil "because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world." (1 Jn 4:4b) God is not the origin of evil yet we feel the consequences of it daily. Only by His power can we overcome. "Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them." (1 Jn 4:4a) There was a lot of prayer following 911 and rightly so.

See You at the Pole
A most special day of the year when students gather at the school flagpole to pray. As we see in disaster, faith is not absent from our culture in spite of what the media would like us to believe. For more info see www.syatp.net.
Theme verse: "Call to me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know." Jer 33:3 (NKJV)
God desires a spiritual awakening on your campus more than you could ever imagine! He wants to breathe new life into Christians that is so contagious it affects your entire community and the world. In 1990, a movement began with only 10 ordinary students that later came to be known as See You at the Pole™. When God says in Jeremiah 33:33, "great and mighty things you do not know," He means the things that only He can do—supernatural, unexpected, extraordinary miracles—experiences that are beyond human comprehension or explanation!
Do you really want to see and experience an unbelievable wave of awakening on your campus? What is going on at your school that can only be explained by the power of God? How desperately do you desire for God to come in power? Is your heart truly broken for your non-Christian friends and the sin on your campus? When you are seriously sold out and passionate about God He will honor your humble, broken, desperate cry. He wants to hear from you!
SYATP is your opportunity, the perfect rallying point to bring together other believers, to start new and fresh . . . a new beginning and opportunity for the Spirit of God to radically impact your school. Do you really believe this school year can be different? Really? Radically different? IT CAN BE—STARTING WITH YOU! "The prayer life of the Christian is the true gauge of the rest of his/her life. No one's spiritual walk ever exceeds one's inner life of prayer. Your zeal, busyness, generosity, or witnessing is only as effective as your time alone with God in prayer. Everything you become and accomplish for the glory of God depends on prayer like nothing else in all the world." (Adapted) If you are serious about selling out for Christ—hold on for the ride—you will be amazed at what God will do. God can use you beyond your wildest dreams! There is no better way than to pray, believing for the unimaginable. Dream big and pray with faith!

ID in RRPS?
A couple weeks have passed since the initial uproar. Rio Rancho Public Schools has established an official policy regarding alternative theories to the theory of evolution. They will stick to it barring legal action. Recall legal action initiated by the ACLU in 1925 to force evolution into public education. Now they threaten schools if evolution is not the ONLY theory taught. Encouragement of the board for their bold decision is appreciated as they stand firm under fire.
"Thank you for your input. Please be assured that we are sharing all comments with the school board. You may view the policy on our website, www.rrps.net – click on the "Policies" tab near the top of the home page."
Best regards, Kim Vesely, Communications Officer, RRPS, 896-0667 ext. 219
What about RRPS board member Kathy Jackson? Why was she reported as saying "this is not the right time and maybe we should wait and see how all this plays out?" Per Kathy's request, the "rest of the story" was not revealed two weeks ago. She was quoted from a meeting prior to the meeting where a vote was taken on the proposal. She voted for the proposal demonstrating she is in favor of allowing students to discuss alternative theories of origin. She clarified that intelligent design (or any other alternative theory) will not be "taught" in the classroom. The proposal allows only for student discussion in accordance with state science standards.
Strand 1, Standard 1, 9-12 Benchmark 2. Understand that scientific processes produce scientific knowledge that is continually evaluated, validated, revised, or rejected.
1. Understand how scientific processes produce valid, reliable results, including:
* consistency of explanations with data and observations
* openness to peer review
* full disclosure and examination of assumptions
* testability of hypotheses
* repeatability of experiments and reproducibility of results.
2. Use scientific reasoning and valid logic to recognize:
* faulty logic
* cause and effect
* the difference between observation and unsubstantiated inferences and conclusions
* potential bias.
3. Understand how new data and observations can result in new scientific knowledge.
4. Critically analyze an accepted explanation by reviewing current scientific knowledge.
"Throughout the standards the integrity of science and its underlying scientific principles are completely sound as students are encouraged to apply their critical thinking skills to examine data and observations, ask questions, investigate, explore alternatives, and seek solutions. The very nature of science is inquiry - the challenge of testing new hypotheses and asking new questions." [Except when it comes to evolution! Apparently the "old" hypotheses are sacred.] http://nmlites.org/standards/science/index.html
The Abq Journal presented articles on Sep 4 that pitted science against religion. They try to frame the debate so "design" is perceived as "religion." Yet scientists search for design in the universe through the well funded Search for Extraterrestial Intelligence (SETI) program. Archeologists and police detectives sort out design from natural occurences. There was little discussion of evidence other than an excellent editorial by Paul Veers, an engineer at Sandia National Labs, buried in the op ed section of the paper. In a subsequent paper, an editorial by this editor was printed pointing out the need to follow the scientific method and examine the evidence without preconceived beliefs. Other editorials by intelligent design proponents have also been printed recently. Micro-evolution is often confused with macro-evolution in the debate where evolutions use examples of small changes to prove large changes. Evolution has become a religion if its adherants cannot even allow disscussion. We are seeing the end of an era when scientists who have spent their lives promoting and defending evolution cannot let it go in spite of evidence to the contrary. There is a growing list of scientists skeptical of evolution.
Please contact the Rio Rancho School Board and encourage them to stand firm in their decision to follow NM Science Standards and allow options for discussing alternatives to the theory of evolution. Some teachers are currently intimidating and harassing students who are skeptical of the theory of evolution and who want to pursue other options.
The Privileged Planet is scheduled to be shown on KOB TV Chan 4 on Saturday afternoon, October 1 at 4 pm. Why the controversy and uproar about a challenge to evolution? We'd like to know. I've heard of freedom of religion, but freedom of science? What's the big deal UNLESS evolution is religion.

Election Schedule
The ballot on Oct 4 will include candidates for Abq Mayor and City Council (odd districts). Also watch for bond issues and other city initiatives on the ballot. A measure to provide public funding for political candidates would put conservative (politically incorrect) candidates at a disadvantage since funding would certainly be pulled if a candidate said anything against abortion, homosexuality, "safe" sex, environmental activism, or evolution. Responses to the Principles Candidate Survey have been minimal but watch for updates at www.rges.cc/election.htm. The Chamber of Commerce, Abq Journal, Abq Tribune, and League of Women Voters are also conducting candidate surveys. You are encouraged to call the candidates (Mayor and your City Council district). A list of candidates is available at www.cabq.gov/clerk/pdf/candidatescert.pdf.
- Sep 5 - absentee voting begins
- Oct 4 - election
- Nov 18 - runoff if needed (40%, 45 days)
The election. See www.cabq.gov/clerk for more info on the election.

Cartoonist Makes Debut on NM Standard
Cartoonist Patty Hawkins makes her official debut on www.newmexicostandard.com. "Hell in a Hand Basket" addresses her concerns about the cultural direction our public school system is taking. Hawkins hopes to reach readers with her stinging criticisms of public education through the eyes of a boy named Justin, a conservative child in a liberal world. When everything's going wrong, Justin is there to set the record straight. Check out her latest creation on www.newmexicostandard.com.
Hawkins makes her home in Monroe, Ga. A born-again Christian, she's been drawing cartoons her whole life. Her unique perspective on life motivated her to start drawing cartoons as a young child. As the mother of two grown children, she can relate to the struggles many parents face when sending their kids to modern public schools. "There's so much bad stuff being taught today," she says. "I think we're losing our core values as a nation."

NM Bike Ride for the Family
Pastor John Powell from Las Cruces and Mark Burton from Albuquerque recently completed a three day bike ride from Questa to Santa Fe. We discussed issues such as Covenant Marriage, Intelligent Design, Christian Heritage, and Christian Education with pastors and church leaders in Questa, Taos, Espanola, and Santa Fe. These issues were chosen for their significant impact on the traditional family in today's culture. We distributed 18 copies of the DVDs Unlocking the Mystery of Life and The Privileged Planet to pastors and church leaders along the way. God provided many contacts along the way such as a lady in a dollar store who directed us to her church. We had a warm reception from Pastor Nick Shields at the Wed evening service of Taos Valley Baptist Church. We also had an exciting meeting with Pastor Erwin Babb and Pastor Rob Muncy following a Thur evening Vacation Bible School at Coronado Baptist Church in Espanola. These pastors (and others in Espanola) are the most involved with public policy issues that I have ever seen!
The ride was no more than 50 miles a day and very enjoyable with no wind and relatively cool weather. Had some "Bible Stops" along the way, such as the fish hatchery in Questa and the Kit Carson Museum in Taos. The Bible has many references to fish and is a central NT analogy as Jesus calls us to be "fishers of men." Kit Carson had impeccable chararcter traits unusual for the wild west. These were apparently instilled by his parents though he spent considerable time away from his devoted wife, Josefa. A relative of Kit Carson's wife was giving tours at the museum. She said people to this day dislike her working at the museum because of Carson's absences while he was off saving the country. He was a good father and Josefa loved him dearly.
Special thanks to Tom Bozone and Mike Naranjo of Rock Christian Outreach who got us a room in Espanola (even though they were out of town)! The Taos Indian Mission also gave us an unexpected lunch when we arrived at just the right moment on Wed afternoon. Lorenzo and Lia Bello provided wonderful hospitality on Tue night in Questa before the ride. The Bellos have a website with information on natural medicines, www.homeopathicare.org.
Anyone interested in joining a ride next summer, please email principles@integrity.com.

Readers Talk Back
I’m hoping many folks will e-mail the Rio Rancho School Board with positive comments about the new policy...which allows for discussion of origins. They could use the encouragement!! The School Board email is: schoolboard@rrdo.rrps.k12.nm.us Thanks…Mary Pierce
I truly appreciate the hard work that goes on behind the scenes in creating this newsletter. It is truly a blessing to us here at TBN. I have passed all the prayer requests and events to our prayer partners for immediate prayer, and the information that you share with us is valuable. I have also been able to place on our community calendar some of those events. I am a pastor's wife, besides running the station here, and I don't get much of a chance to visit other churches and see what the Lord is doing in their midst, and this newsletter really blesses me, and helps in producing our local program with people that truly love the Lord and share His good news. Thank you, again. May the Lord bless all of your efforts and all of those involved in it's production.
Blessings, Cindy Mansfield, GM, Trinity Broadcasting Network
